Abstract This paper considers the current state of Internet development in Europe. Internet penetration in key markets is compared. Demographic differences and the importance of access from different locations is discussed. Key factors that will drive the growth of the Internet in Europe are advertising and e-commerce. Factors that are likely to influence their development are considered alongside predictions for the speed of growth. A brief overview is given of the state of development in key markets, including an analysis of the websites visited most frequently. The implications for the research industry are also considered.
